Masks Optional At British Columbia Retailers

With the end of mandatory mask requirements in British Columbia on July 1, retailers have taken a variety of approaches. Signs have gone up outside of retail establishments with new instructions about face coverings. Some are recommending or strongly recommending that masks be worn. Others, like Starbucks, say they are optional. While coverings are no longer required in indoor spaces, health officials are still recommending them for those who aren’t fully vaccinated and individual stores can still require masks. Dr. Anna Wolak, a member of Masks for Canada, says since most of the population has not been fully vaccinated and the province has not reached the threshold for herd immunity, “when you’re going to the grocery store, you do not know what the vaccination status of every single person in the grocery store is, so it would be prudent to keep the mask on,” she says.
