Retail Sales Down From Third Lockdown

Retail sales declined 2.1 per cent to $53.8 billion in May, says Statistics Canada. The largest declines were for building material, garden equipment, and supply dealers, which decreased 11.3 per cent, and motor vehicles and parts dealers which were down 2.4 per cent. During the month of May, many retailers continued to face closures due to the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there was an increase in retail sales for provinces like Saskatchewan (up 1.7 per cent) and Manitoba (up 0.3 per cent), led by categories such as motor vehicles and parts dealers.
