AQMAT Lobbies For Sunday Closures

The Quebec Hardware and Building Supply Association (AQMAT) is trying to support hardware dealers by lobbying the Quebec government to allow home improvement retailers and building supply dealers to close their stores on Sundays. It has sent letters to the Quebec Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Solidarity on the topic. Quebec consumers are in favour of the move with 70.9 per cent saying they are somewhat or totally in favour of closing businesses on Sundays, says Richard Darveau, president and CEO of AQMAT. “No surprises there,” he says. “Our retailers are connected to their customers, they know very well what the point of view is.” Since COVID, retailers are finding it hard to find reliable employees, with candidates wanting more flexibility with hours and conditions. AQMAT wants the Quebec government to not only allow home improvement retailers to close on Sundays, but also protect them by prohibiting other businesses from selling hardware and building materials on Sundays. The Quebec government has not offered an official position on the issue at this time.
