June Wholesale Sales Decline

Wholesale sales fell 0.8 per cent in June to $71.5 billion, ending three consecutive monthly increases, says Statistics Canada. The sales reflect declines in the building material and supplies, machinery, equipment, and supplies subsectors. Sales also fell for personal and household goods, motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts, and accessories subsectors. June wholesale inventories fell 0.6 per cent to $94.6 billion and wholesale volumes fell 1.4 per cent. Despite decreases in June, the second quarter of 2021 sales of wholesale goods were 2.6 per cent higher than the first quarter, the fourth consecutive quarterly increase. This included a jump in building materials, lumber, food, beverage, and tobacco, and personal household good subsectors. However, motor vehicle, motor vehicle parts, and accessories subsector, fell 2.8 per cent.
