Renovation Interest Continues

Sixteen months after the pandemic emerged, interest in renovations remains strong with more than 30 per cent of Canadian homeowners planning to renovate their kitchen or bathroom in the next 12 months, says a survey by Formica Canada. However, many consumers are postponing these plans due to lack of funds. When renovating their kitchen, choosing the countertop is the primary focus of the project or second only to cabinet colour for 55 per cent of homeowners, while only 13 per cent say a renovation can be carried out without changing the countertop. Top features when looking for a countertop include ease of maintenance and cleaning, durability, stain and bacteria resistance, and value for money. Environmental sustainability is also important to homeowners, with 57 per cent rating it as very or somewhat important. When asked what they consider most important in terms of respecting and protecting the environment when evaluating their next kitchen countertop choice, respondents prioritize non-toxic materials, locally manufactured and sourced materials, certified materials, and traceable materials.
