SOPREMA Recycles Polystyrene For Manufacturing Use

SOPREMA will recover polystyrene collected in the municipality's two eco-centres in Sherbrooke, QC. This agreement will make it possible to recover approximately 18 tonnes of material annually, which will prevent the polystyrene from going to landfill sites. The polystyrene will be sent to the company’s Sherbrooke plant for full recycling and will be used in the manufacture of extruded polystyrene insulation panels. These are made up of up to 70 per cent recycled content and are used to insulate the walls, foundations, and roofs of homes and buildings. SOPREMA has already concluded similar agreements with the Le Val-Saint-François regional county municipality and Gatineau, QC. The partnerships are part of the company’s goal to reduce its GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 71 per cent by 2030.
