July Retail Sales Continue Rise


Retail sales reached $60 billion in July, an increase of 5.2 per cent month-over-month, says Statistics Canada. Sales were led by automotive and household fuels, increasing 35.7 per cent from August 2020. Additionally, spending increased for non-essential items such as clothing (up 17.3 per cent); hardware, tools, renovation, and garden products (up five per cent); lumber, renovation materials, and supplies (up 7.5 per cent); and floor coverings and tiles (up 12.1 per cent) from the same time last year. However, recreational vehicles decreased 19. 2 per cent, recreational boats went down 29 per cent, and travel trailers and truck campers decreased 15 per cent. Retail food also continues to decline as restaurant sales go up, falling 0.5 per cent in July.
