August Retail Sales Increase


Retail sales reached $59.1 billion in August, an increase of 8.5 per cent year-over-year, says Statistics Canada. Sales of automotive and household fuels posted the highest growth, up 38.9 per cent, followed by clothing (up 15.9 per cent). However, retail food sales saw a decline of 0.6 per cent. Sales in the hardware, tools, and renovation and lawn and garden products sector were $4.83 billion in August, up 3.9 per cent over sales of $4.65 billion in the year-ago period. Home furniture, furnishings, housewares, appliances, and electronics were up 4.2 per cent year-over-year.
