Retail Sales See Slight Increase

Retail sales increased 0.9 per cent to $60.7 billion in April from the previous month, with sales up in six of 11 sectors representing 43.3 per cent of retail trade. Eight provinces were up in sales with British Columbia leading with a 1.3 per cent increase followed by Ontario at 1.2 per cent. Core retail sales were up one per cent in April, with higher sales at general merchandise stores leading the increase (4.2 per cent). Sales were also up 11.3 per cent at miscellaneous store retailers from a month ago, the largest increase in the subsector since February 2021. The largest decline in retail sales came from building material, and garden equipment and supplies dealers which dropped 4.3 per cent from last month, the first decline in the subsector in four months. Retail eCommerce sales were up 0.9 per cent from the previous month, on an adjusted basis sales were down 21 per cent year over year to $3.3 billion in April.
