May Manufacturing Sales Down

Manufacturing sales fell two per cent to $71.6 billion in May following seven consecutive monthly increases, says Statistics Canada. Eleven of 21 industries had lower sales. Primary metal sales fell 4.1 per cent to $6.3 million, still the second highest sales level on record after April. Decreases in the miscellaneous manufacturing (10.8 per cent), plastic and rubber product (3.9 per cent), and non-metallic mineral product (6.4 per cent) industries also contributed to the monthly decline. Manufacturing sales decreased in five provinces, led by Ontario where sales fell 5.3 per cent to 29.9 billion, and British Columbia where sales decreased 1.4 per cent to $5.8 billion in May.
