Consumers Facing Appliance Shortages

Retailers are facing a shortage of appliances due to a combination of home renovations, new construction, discounts for energy-efficient appliances, and pent-up demand which created record sales in the spring. This, combined with supply chain problems and surging demand, has resulted in mounting backorders ahead of the busiest shopping season of the year, says CTV News. Meanwhile, manufacturers have run into problems obtaining parts and have been forced to scale-back production or shutdown facilities to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols. Consumers are now facing a limited selection of in-stock appliances or record wait times for special orders and some popular appliances. Harvard Business Reviews says that manufacturers that have been mostly reactive to the pandemic in terms of securing raw materials and protecting supply lines are having the most problems. In contrast, a small minority of companies that invested in mapping their supply networks before the pandemic have emerged better prepared.
