Hardware, Garden Lead August Retail Sales

Retail sales reached $55.1 billion dollars in August, up 0.9 per cent compared with the same month a year prior, says Statistics Canada. This marked the third consecutive increase in year-over-year sales for the sector. Higher sales were reported in 10 of the 19 commodity categories with the category of hardware, tools, and renovation and lawn and garden products posting the largest rise in sales (+16.5 per cent) for August. This marks the category's fourth consecutive increase as consumers continued to place an emphasis on completing projects around their homes. Higher sales came primarily from renovation materials and supplies (+14.6 per cent), with lumber and other renovation materials and supplies (+17.9 per cent) leading the gains. Sales of hardware and tools also grew 29.7 per cent. Receipts of home furniture, furnishings, housewares, appliances, and electronics increased 7.2 per cent in August, largely on the strength of higher sales of home appliances (+28.1 per cent), housewares (+6.9 per cent), and home furnishings (+7.2 per cent).
