Ontario Takes Steps To Harmonize Building Codes
The government of Ontario has taken a step towards harmonizing its building codes with national building codes by signing the ‘Reconciliation Agreement on Construction Codes’ under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement. The step means that Ontario building and fire codes will be more in line with those in effect in other parts of the country and will reduce red tape and remove barriers related to interprovincial trade throughout the country. The province will maintain some variations and exceptions, however. The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) continues to evolve with a transformed national code development system, including a new governance structure that will be more responsive to provinces and territories, and free access to national construction codes across Canada in digital format.
